What is a Torrent?

There are a lot of free file hosting sites out there, that allow people to download files. Unfortunately, for mostly all sites, there is a file size limit of about 200mb unless you become a member. But let me introduce you to a torrent!! (That means keep reading!)

A torrent is a way to share large files with anyone over the internet. It is on a peer-to-peer basis, which means, to download, you share part of the file with other people across the Net. The person with the original file creates a small torrent file and uploads it to a website. He acts as a seeder, a person who distributes the parts of the file to the peers, or leechers

Each person downloads a part of the file to their computer, and shares it with other peers. This saves time. The peers share their specific parts with everyone else until the file is complete. Then the people with the downloaded file can now act as other seeders.

How to download torrents:

Downloading torrents is easy, if you have the right program. The only way to download a torrent is with a BitTorrent program. Here are some popular torrent programs:

uTorrent (Mac/Windows)

BitComet (Windows)

I hope this tutorial helps broaden your knowledge of torrents. For some great torrents, check out thepiratebay.org. Enjoy!
